Competent Persons Schemes
Competent Persons Schemes have been introduced by the Government to allow trades people to self-certify that their work complies with Building Regulations in England and Wales, as an alternative to submitting a building notice or using an approved building control inspector to Inspect your work. The aim of the schemes is to enhance compliance with Building Regulations.

Individuals and companies who join the schemes can self-certify that their work complies with the Building Regulations and so avoid submitting a building notice, local authority inspections and fees.

There are currently more than 10 scheme providers in the market but it is crucial that installers assess each scheme carefully before joining one. Plumbing and heating engineers should do their homework and find out exactly what elements of the Building Regulations each scheme will allow them to self-certify, as membership of some schemes is not mandatory in order to trade in specific niche markets.
