Revised Part G – a good news story
[Back to Articles]

The country was swamped with political news in June so the publication of the Revised Part G of the Building Regulations was knocked from the headlines. But the new regulations are great news since they will help prevent almost 30 scalding deaths a year.
From October all new homes, or substantial refurbishments requiring planning permission, must conform to the new regulations. Everyone involved in new bathroom installation will be affected and the BMA is keen to ensure that the industry is fully up to speed with the new requirements.
“Scalding is not usually a major story” comments Yvonne Orgill, chief executive of the BMA, “but 30 deaths and almost 600 injuries from uncontrolled hot water is serious news. Any legislation aimed at reducing these terrible statistics should be welcomed.”
From October, baths in new bathrooms must be fitted with a Thermostatic Mixing Valve which controls hot water to a safe temperature, preventing scalding.
The TMV is relatively inexpensive but until now has only usually been found in use in commercial premises. Knowledge of the product in the industry is therefore sketchy but an excellent new publication from the BMA is set to change that. The TMV guide is a valuable resource.
Readable text and excellent images bring home the importance of the TMV. The guide, in PDF format, is downloadable from the BMA’s Bathroom Academy website at www.bathroom-academy.co.uk/guides2.asp and for a nominal administration fee of £20 readers may apply to register for the Guide and Full CPD Certification.
