Water efficiency is in the spotlight and the use of water in our bathrooms has, quite rightly, come under increasing scrutiny by our government. The Code for Sustainable Homes and Building Regulations Approved Document G were recently revised and the decade-old Water Regulations 1999 are now under review.
The BMA represents 35 major bathroom manufacturers operating in the UK and its members have responded positively and quickly to the revised legislation and excellent new water saving bathroom products have come to market in recent months.
Ultra low flush WCs, low volume baths, and low volume showers, handsets and taps have been launched. Additionally ‘grey water’ recycling products are gaining popularity and are being incorporated into new homes and commercial buildings.
In anticipation of these latest developments and to assist housebuilders understand what bathroom products are available to achieve level three of the Code for Sustainable Homes the BMA launched its unique, web-based, Water Efficient Product Labelling Scheme (WEPLS) in 2007.
The scheme quickly became established and is now recognised throughout the industry, and by government, as the most useful guide to the very best in water efficient products. Those which have been proven to be water efficient (against criteria set by experts within the industry) are continually being added to the huge database of products – online at www.water-efficiencylabel.org.uk/
