End of an era in the British Bathroom
[Back to Articles]

Mike Rymill, Technical Director of the Bathroom Manufacturers Association for seventeen years has retired.
Mike, the well known and undisputed expert in everything concerned with the British bathroom has closed the lid of his laptop and turned off his metaphorical eco-click taps for the very last time! He is now looking forward to a well-earned retirement.
“Mike will be sorely missed,” commented Yvonne Orgill, chief executive of the BMA. “He has been a senior member of the BMA Secretariat for almost two decades and during that time has had a major influence on the fortunes of the UK bathroom industry. Anyone involved with the technical aspects of the bathroom will have come into contact with Mike at some time or other, relying on his expert and very detailed knowledge of the trade.”
Mike has worked in the bathroom industry for 45 years. In his long and remarkable career, which began at Armitage Shanks way back in 1964, he has seen many changes.
“The appearance, disappearance and now reappearance of deep and richly coloured sanitaryware has been fascinating to see,” said Mike. “There have been many changes in the industry but most exciting has been how the industry has blossomed in recent years. The choice of bathroom product design is now greater than ever before.”
Mike thinks that one of the highlights of his time at the BMA was the very detailed negotiations he undertook, on behalf of the industry, with the government regarding the introduction of the 1999 Water Regulations. “At times it was something of a sparring match. Fortunately, today, relations with government officials are much better, there is more of a partnership and officials are more willing to work with industry to resolve problems.”
Mike is looking forward to spending his retirement walking in the Peak District and enjoying the excitement of GP Motor sport. He will also be cheering on Jenson Button in his victories in the F1.
Members of the BMA and all the staff in the BMA Secretariat wish Mike and his family a long and very happy retirement.
