Space saving doesn’t mean design sacrifice
[Back to Articles]

“Good bathroom design does not have to be sacrificed when space is at a premium,” says Yvonne Orgill, chief executive of the Bathroom Manufacturers Association. “Our members are working hard to develop superior space saving products which are both functional and look absolutely stunning.”
Home improvement is at the top of the agenda for householders who are unable to move and the bathroom is an ideal target. Modestly-sized bathrooms are being refurbished with products which make the best use of the space available.
A development which has created a step change in small bathroom design is the ‘wet room.’ Several manufacturers now include wet room products in their portfolio and the choice for the consumer is better than ever before. The fully flat floor and the open feel to an uncluttered wet room has really caught the imagination of the householder. Safe, clean and open showering spaces are increasing in popularity and growth is set to continue.
Sanitaryware itself has also come under the designer’s scrutiny. Space saving products are not particularly new but designers are now creating clever WC and washbasin styles which push the manufacturing of these clay-based products to the limit. Short projection and corner mounted pieces, which still fully conform with standards and regulations, are tricky to produce but they make the best use of the available space.
The BMA recently launched an all new consumer guide to wet rooms on its website at www.bathroom-association.org/advice_wet_rooms.asp. This very readable guide follows the same format as others in the series. Industry jargon is explained, frequently asked questions are answered and a steer to the best questions to ask in the showroom is given. The guides are published with the specific aim of educating and informing the consumer, and, of course, encouraging them to purchase!
