The Digital Shower – a remarkable product

The digital shower, which is a relatively recent bathroom innovation, continues its relentless growth in popularity. Yvonne Orgill, chief executive of the Bathroom Manufacturers Association takes a look at some of the key technical benefits of this remarkable product.
Key Benefits
Three key benefits of the digital shower are contributing to its phenomenal success.
The first is its ease of installation. A digital shower is absolutely ideal for a bathroom renovation since it can be installed with little or no damage to the existing tiling in a shower enclosure or wet room. The control box may be installed in the loft, airing cupboard or under the bath. When installed in the loft, all the pipework can be hidden, with little disruption to existing decor using the ceiling connection to the shower hose. Ease of installation has been a major bonus for householders who are staying put and not moving but renovating their properties during the economic downturn.
Secondly, safety is built in. The digital control box, which replaces the traditional shower valve and pump, is entirely electronic, giving very accurate and safe thermostatic control of the water temperature. The processor blends the water to the selected temperature and delivers it to the shower head. Additionally for some models, a separate hand-held wireless remote allows each member of the family to set his or her preferred showering temperature. The shower may be programmed for use at different times of the day - a cold shower to wake you in the morning and a warm one to relax you at night. Visible or audible signals highlight the set temperatures. This very high level of control (some models have safety locks) is ideal when the shower is used by the very young, the elderly or infirm.
And finally, the system can be specified to suit the particular plumbing system of the house. Unconverted older properties, using a low pressure system, can benefit from a unit with built-in booster pump. A more modern property using a high pressure plumbing system would use the standard non-pumped digital shower.
More details on digital showers can be found and downloaded from the BMA ‘Bathroom Academy’ website at http://www.bathroom-academy.co.uk/pdf/showercontrols.pdf where this most popular of downloads is freely available. Manufacturers brochures can also be ordered direct from the BMA website.
